The problem boils down to whether the glass is a special solid substance.
British and German scientists have decided, in their opinion, the problem glasses. Nobel prize winner Philip Anderson called this problem, actual for the last more than 50 years, “the deepest problem of solid state physics”. A study published in the journal Physical Review X, briefly about it, reports the University of Bristol (UK).
“The problem boils down to whether the glass is a special solid substance according to the so-called thermodynamic interpretation or it is so viscous liquid, filling her glass takes time, dynamic interpretation, about a million times the age of the Universe,” said co-author Patrick Royal.
The experts found that the dynamic interpretation of the glass is fair up to a critical point — temperature when not crystallizing substance becomes a solid. After this is true the thermodynamic interpretation of the glass, whereby at a sufficiently low temperature the substance becomes a so-called ideal glass.
In the study, the authors created materials similar to the perfect glass. The work of scientists removes the contradiction between the thermodynamic and dynamic approaches to the glasses. According to scientists, these methods describe solid amorphous metastable substances are complementary and with different positions characterize the nature of the materials.
