The robot made incisions better than people.

Engineers at the University of Maryland have developed a robot that is able to make cuts more accurately and precisely than the real surgeons.

The study of the robot and people is carried out on tissues of pigs.

The robot is called Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot, abbreviated as STAR. The results of this experiment were presented at a recent conference on robotics IROS 2017.

The experiments were conducted on the tissues of pigs. Making sure that the robot is able to perform precise incisions, Dr. Krieger and his colleagues put a robot against experienced surgeons. They were tasked to make a straight cut length of 5 cm on a pre-cut line. The grades were given based on deviations from the line and causing extra damage. STAR coped with the task better.
