Review of the film “a Field in England”

Somewhere in England, on one of the fields of the Civil war, we meet four. A cowardly alchemist dropout Whitehead, suspiciously friendly Cutler, and the simple-minded Jacob, and Friend. And they decide that war with them, perhaps, enough. Four of the new acquaintances go through the field in search of the nearest tavern. However, it soon turns out that Cutler is not as simple as it seems. He feeds of “friends” hallucinogenic mushrooms, and taking advantage of their insanity, losing their guts to a certain O’neill, Irish or mercenary, or the alchemist.

It turns out that O’neill and Whitehead have long been familiar, both to some extent versed in witchcraft, and frankly hate each other. Magic their rivalry ends with a kind of fight – which the viewer does not show directly, but it is still one of the most terrifying scenes in the film. After the defeat of Whitehead the whole company goes to look for buried treasure on the field under the guidance of O’neill.

Comic realism, traces of which can be seen in the beginning, more and more gives way to pure hallucinatory surrealism – visions of visiting heroes have gone from mundane reality, characters die and resurrect without much explanation of right and left, but rather ordinary frames are replaced by a psychedelic mosaic of snapshots, crazy installation, unexpected close-UPS and equally unexpected moments of almost complete calm.

What is actually happening, it is impossible to understand, and, in General, not necessary. Much more interesting to try to notice all the little “clues” left by the writer, all the hints for a reasonable explanation for things happening on screen madness and play a little with each of them. In the film you can see reflections on the relations of Christianity and paganism, and a form of social criticism, and something anti-war, and a fantasy on the theme of Hermeticism, and the story about people traveling through Hell (I guess that the writers meant it). None of the develops more or less complete, but the wealth of possible interpretations happy.

In fact, the film, of course, visual. The combination of pastoral tranquility and psychedelic visions, melancholic and grotesque nature of the characters, creates a striking atmosphere, both creepy, and strangely soothing and hypnotic. It’s amazing really, how well fit in with this atmosphere suits (much like the cult Witchfinder General), and the speech of the characters – a little stylized blend of Shakespeare and vulgar humor.

The originality of “A Field in England” is both the main advantage and the main problem of the film. Because the watch collection not too interrelated scenes, reminiscent of most bad freaky coming, hard. And the viewer who seeks, first and foremost, a complete history will be disappointed. The question “What can that mean? What’s the story?” remains unanswered, and to accept that challenge.

But as the product of exclusively visual, “A Field in England” is definitely a success. And a huge success. If we consider the film not as a story but as a set of images, acting solely on vision and hearing, and not requiring any rationalization or explanation, the films at least comparable to “A Field in England”, is not enough. Particularly impressive is the ending, which would not be ashamed and David Lynch. The film is definitely strange, even too strange, but incredibly beautiful. And in its stunningly effective. Watch “A Field in England” – how to eat those hallucinogenic mushrooms. Or get a concussion. Also not very clear what exactly happened, and feeling to describe is difficult, but ignoring it won’t work. If he liked you – a moot point, but forget it will not work, no matter how you try – fact.
