The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko congratulated Ukrainians on Christmas, which this year is celebrated as a national holiday. He said this in his video.

“For the first time as a national holiday, we celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar — along with most of the Christian world, together with Europe… But we are in no way impinge on the long-standing tradition to celebrate Christmas on 7 January, honor her and respect. Choose a calendar is a personal right, but the task of the state is to guarantee this right and to give the opportunity of choice,” the President said.

P. Poroshenko noted that Ukraine is unique in its religious tolerance, and said that he decided from now on to celebrate Christmas twice.

“Personally, I have decided to celebrate twice. So today join your solemn action. Two weeks later, the Ukrainians will again sing Christmas carols and rejoice in the birth of the Savior of the world. As wrote the Apostle Paul, we Christians are “one body and one spirit, one Lord, one faith and one baptism.” Ukraine is unique in its tolerance and respect for religious feelings. We are Orthodox, Greek Catholics, Roman Catholics. We — the whole variety of Protestant churches. We — Muslims and Jews. We all together — Ukrainians”, — said the head of state.

The President congratulated Ukrainians on the occasion and wished that Ukraine always was the Lord.

“Let our spiritual work and earnest prayer and further argue imperishable Christian values. Let there always be with us and our beloved country our Lord. As said the same Apostle Paul: “the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy spirit be with you all” — he said.

As reported, on November 16 the Verkhovna Rada made the day of the celebration of Catholic Christmas — December 25 — weekends, may 2 — working day. November 29, President Petro Poroshenko signed the law.
