Government of Madagascar called on citizens to abandon Famadihana – traditional ritual dances with the dead relatives due to the growing epidemic of plague.
“If a person died from pneumonic plague, and then his grave is opened for carrying out Famadihana, the infection can be transmitted to those who are in contact with the body,” said the chief of staff of the Ministry of health Willie Randriamaro.
Famadihana – a ritual ceremony honoring the dead, during which the dead reach from the grave, changing them to the shroud, take your hands and dance with them, and then put back into the grave.
According to local beliefs, the person goes to another world only when his body is completely decomposed, and this time it is necessary to periodically “shake things up”, communicating with family and friends.
