Parliament declared Christmas weekends

The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that made December 25 an official holiday and a day off and cancelled a day off on may 2.

“For” the adoption of the draft law No. 5496 voted 238 deputies.

Initially, the document was not offered to do a work day on may 2, but such a proposal was made by the speaker Andriy Parubiy. First, this edit has not received the required number of votes – opposed the Radical party. After that, the speaker put to vote the draft law in its original form, however, it is also not accepted – a number of MPs protested that Ukraine will increase the number of output. Need rating vote for two options, but both gained a little more than 200 votes. After a long discussion, the head of the Radical party Oleg Lyashko said that his group agreed to cancel the output on 2 may. In the end the law is adopted.

Changes made to the Code of labour laws. May 1 was renamed labor Day and will stay the weekend.

“About 23 172 active religious Orthodox, Greek Catholic and some other Christian communities celebrate Christmas on 7 January according to the Julian calendar. At the same time, today in Ukraine there are about 11 000 religious Catholic and Protestant communities, representing about 30% of all religious organizations of Ukraine, who celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar 25 December”, – stated in the explanatory note to the bill.

Christmas is celebrated twice, on December 25 and January 7, Belarus, Moldova, Lebanon and Albania.
