Orthodox Christians in Russia celebrate Easter

Today Orthodox Christians in Russia celebrate Easter. The day begins breaking fast after a long lent. The main attributes of the festive table are painted eggs, Easter cake and Easter (sweet dish made from cottage cheese with raisins).

The painted egg is a symbol of peace, stained with the blood of Jesus Christ, and in it is reviving to a new life. Cake (high bread pastry) — the symbol of the Lord’s body, which should partake of the believers.

The celebration lasts for 40 days — until the ascension.

On the eve of the Holy fire from Jerusalem was brought to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, where he began the Easter service led by Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill. In the Cathedral and gathered around him thousands of believers, many inside do not have enough space. They listened to the solemn prayer, and went in procession.

The service traditionally attended by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev with his wife, and the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin.
