Open mineral, purifying the air

Scientists have found a way of extracting a mineral known as magnesite, which can absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.

Thus, the researchers suggest a potential strategy for combating climate change. Every ton of magnesite is able to remove around half a ton of CO2 from the atmosphere.

“Today, we recognize that this is an experimental process, and it will need to be improved before we are confident that the magnesite be used in carbon sequestration,” said Professor and curator of research Jan Age.

As the world tries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, experts generally agree that technologies that reduce the amount of CO2 in the air can be an important tool in reducing global warming.

The results were presented to scientists at a conference on Geochemistry, Goldschmidt in Boston.

However, some scholars have described the expectations from the research, “over-optimistic”, given the lack of procedures, ready for their production.
