Dark thrillers, which action develops in the 18, 19 centuries have a special flair for long and haunting, even if far from perfect in terms of script, cinematography, acting or directing work. When we talk about this kind of movie, then come immediately to mind “From hell” (2001) and “the Raven” (2012) – just good examples though not perfect, but memorable films. Here now you can add and British painting “the Golem”.
Let “the Golem” and not acted level stars johnny Depp or John kusaka, but here vampirebone bill Nighy (in fact, in the franchise “Another world” he played a vampire) in the role of the old gay man (but not sure about the hero Naya spread rumors, but otherwise nothing in the behavior of John Kildare not saying that these rumors have a factual basis) that has been assigned to investigate a series of bloody murders in Limehouse. Prescribed only because it is (due to reputation) is not pathetic, unlike other investigators. The old man, however, is immersed in dealing with head, especially after it finds a connection between the murders of the mysterious Golem (the so-called maniac locals) and death of the playwright John Cree (Sam Reid series “Modern Reaper”), in which the blame of poisoning his wife, acclaimed actress Lizzy Cree (her role diligently and not without glamor plays a 23-year-old Olivia Cooke, for which the “Golem” has become a kind of actor’s benefit).
Karl Marx is more for background.
The film is based on the novel by Peter Ackroyd, but the book, although it seems to be published in Russian, I personally have not read, so can’t and won’t judge “the Golem” how about the film adaptation. Directed by Juan Carlos Medina, and let no one be embarrassed by the exotic name-last name Director – Medina was born in Miami. In addition to the aforementioned characters, in the picture there was a place even a number of characters, including the notorious historical figures: Douglas Booth stars as the famous actor Dan Lino, and urozhdenets the infamous Whitechapel district of London Henry Goodman appears as himself Karl Marx. However, Marx in the story does not play a significant role, in vain, that in the imagination of the investigator and briefly tries on the mask of the killer.
Crimes of the Golem bloody, and mysterious. Their brutality they resemble the adventures of Jack the Ripper (not for nothing is the film the emphasis was on the fact that killing in Limehouse was BEFORE worldwide fame, received the Jack), with no apparent connection between the victims – killed the prostitute, the old Jew, and even a whole family. The suspects, however, pretty soon narrows, and into the hands of Kildare still gets a handwriting sample of a maniac. The attention of the investigator, however, absorbs the fate of Lizzie Cree, gifted girl with a complicated fate, poor thing faces the gallows.
All play all and the Golem is also someone playing.
The plot is skillfully woven the signs of the era. Prudish Victorian England, in which the visible trappings of pompous segregatory not much, and hidden primitive and rude manners. Here’s a brilliant actor forced to clonicine to the delight of the crowd, even a petty chief never misses an opportunity to humiliate his subordinates, a woman plays the role of the cook, and the audience – the audience is out for blood. And this blood gives her Golem from Limehouse.
Despite the fact that the circle of suspects is already outlined in the beginning, to guess about who actually was the Golem, is not so simple. Along with unwinding its course detective intrigue, great attention is paid to issues of feminism, tolerance, performing arts, good in the theatres of that time, women often play men, and men women. At the same time, not all actors manage to really open up in their images. Figure the same Kildare, initially caused a famous interest to the finale becomes, alas, a gray shadow on the background of Dan Lino or Lizzie Cree. The film seems to be closely in the selected format – not enough time and scope to give due attention to everyone who deserves it.
At the same time, the viewer must be prepared that it will show not pure Thriller and even crime Thriller – in a significant way, “Golem” is also “biographical” drama, as the life and fate of Lizzie Creek is paid attention to, no less (sometimes it seems that more) than the main storyline. And let the final all ties together – still in the end you may have the impression that you watched a costume drama, not the story about the bloody adventures of a sick psychopath.
