Well, today finally launched the wide release horror film “Off” in all Russian theaters. To say that I waited for him to say nothing. Not that 2017 first was poor in the premiere interesting (to me as a fan of Stephen king at all to complain about: there’s “the Dark tower” and the new “It”), however, the first attempt Saw Jordan in the horrors and Director at the same time have long attracted attention, and the film is already unquestionably one of the main this year.
Generally “Away” I looked a bit before the official premiere, a benefit for the may holidays in 500 cinemas across the country were arranged in a kind of preview picture, as shown by the first reports from the field, passed it very successfully. When the people vote ruble for a good movie — it gives hope, you know. In this case I was lucky, and during the session, the hall was almost empty: it is understandable, who go to horror movies in the morning? Well, the answer is: this is the guy who hates it when spectators in the next row whispering, crackling on the phone or even loudly wonder where they went, what is that movie where a raccoon with a big gun? Instead, there was silence, perfect for suspense-horror.
Previous reviewers Zone Horror have already noticed the obvious influence of the classics of the genre on this film. Felix Kriventsov compared to “Off,” with paintings of Roman Polanski, Wes Craven and M. night Shyamalan, and our editor in chief Mikhail Parfenov went even further, calling Jordan’s Saw a worthy pupil of Alfred Hitchcock. And I tend to agree with both. “Off” really made strictly according to the canons of old school cinema. So, on the one hand, we definitely auteur film, but on the other hand, the independent did not call it. Drink not committed to this independence, it just makes very good, very balanced and a really clever horror. You will not scare cheap screamer. A large part of the duration you have to suffer in the precarious uncertainty: whether now begins zvizdets, whether all this is just a joke, a fad, misunderstanding and small household oddities of ordinary people. No, of course you know that all will end tough, but until the last moment everything that happens can be explained more or less harmless reasons. So I don’t have and blame the heroes in perpetual stupidity, they say, then you get poked, run, run, you fools! Away!
So, I began to describe the details of the plot, without giving even a General synopsis of the picture. I hope you know it and so. At all costs thank Saw even at the very outset.
I mean, meet the parents of the girl — it’s a natural horror!
It would seem that the topic has firmly staked out a variety Fockers, so the jokes are that “Away” is a romantic Comedy, is quite relevant. And the humour present in the film, the benefit Jordan Peele, one of the founders of sketch show “Key and Peele”knows in this business sense. However, these jokes are discreet, they slip naturally into the dialogue and not pulls the blanket over herself, just trying to reduce the tension floating in the air. But to ease the situation for them.

And then we finally get to the topic of racism, Central to the strip, is obvious from the beginning, but submitted in the end in a very original form. A black hero, a white girl, very white family — I mean they have even the black servant there — it is clear that nothing good will come of it. There are still guests come friends parents, wealthy people and, of course, also very white. Everyone is smiling, happy our hero, trying to show the democracy of their views, but racism, more than in something softer and sticks out from under their ridiculous or weird comments about natural physique and fashion in black.
And in the background wandering eccentric servants in the dialect of the last century. They’re hiding something, something holding back, something so horrible that it is impossible to pronounce, and only a lonely tear in a tense face trying to replace a deafening cry for help. In the end, after hearing all these surviving from the mind of rich white old men, you wait, when people will take up the guns and pulled the hoods of the Ku Klux Klan…
But no.
Not so simple in the film, Jordan Saw. The racism here is rather to divert your attention, it’s the answer that lies on the surface and to the end it seems only right. However, the Director and scriptwriter Drinking can surprise you. At least with me he has done it, the bastard. Parfenov in his review talked about the fact that the final twist is guessed beforehand and surprise for the audience will not. And I got caught. It wasn’t really stunning “what a TWIST”, but I really liked how the events in the film turned the whole story, forcing us to look differently at what is happening, and all the dialogue of the characters, their profession, Hobbies — it all happened instantly in a completely different picture. Excellent.
Now let’s talk a little bit about how all this is done and why it works.
Operator Toby Oliver some of the visual wonders we don’t shows, but in each frame, in each of the plan felt solid experienced hand. No wonder the dude entrusted to shoot the fourth “Astral”. Along with Oliver tried and editor Gregory Plotkin, deeply entrenched in the franchise “Paranormal”, but now, as you can see, looking for new projects to implement their skills.
But most importantly, pleasing to the eye, is, of course, an acting job in this film. Daniel Kalwa seriously declared itself in the TV series “Black mirror”. “15 million merits”, the second episode of the first season, a futuristic dystopia, a virtual Apocalypse of Jean Baudrillard and all of that. Already there Kalua was excellent, restrained or even repressed facial expressions, broken body language — it was just interesting to see how any other really good actor. His role in “Away” not so bright, because it is not the challenge, however, faces much more and the image came out more curious. Kalua plays alive, his face is in constant reaction to the outside world, but it looks quite harmoniously, no affectation, just a natural emotion, which is fleeting reflection on his face, in his movements. I especially liked how his character cracks a smile whenever he feels uncomfortable. And most importantly, you are also in this moment, feel his discomfort.
Good in its way, Catherine keener. This almost sleepy softness, this weak gentle or sympathetic smile, touching lips at First, her manner of keeping herself disarms, but soon you will be surprised to understand that underneath it all lies a smart, tough and insightful the devil. Great part.
Bradley Whitford and Caleb Landry Jones, father and son of this family, too, looks great. One funny, the other straining his swagger, and both do an excellent job with their functions in the frame.
Showed himself Betty Gabriel, the same domestic servants, lost in time. Even the age of the actress in the film, it is difficult to determine. She’s like a fragile Ghost of the past, chained to the bones with adhering meat. The transformation of Lakita Stanfield, the very existence and way of Stephen root, the role of Allison Williams, well, night Jogging Marcus Henderson was also quite good, and generally acting here on a very serious level, what makes the film so real. Lively characters, lively dialogues. The finale is growing suspicion that such crap could be in any wealthy intelligent family, living in the Outback.
Despite the fact that technically it’s horror, you will not be scare. Well, almost. There are only a few scenes designed to shock. Otherwise this is an excellent suspense-Thriller, pushing against his controversial atmosphere, veiled threats and only a couple of frankly unfriendly characters. Especially pleased (and scared) a scene in which the main character undergoes hypnosis. This feeling of absolute helplessness, typical of nightmares… It was hard.
Well, in the end I would like to note the soundtrack of the film. Composer Michael Ebels basically only sticks to the most classic of genre, but it has a couple of interesting musical inserts at the beginning and at the end, which give the whole picture a special style and even irony. It is primarily famous for the song Run Rabbit Run Noel Gaia and Ralph Butler. During the second world war, she, by the way, there was a parody of “Run, Adolf, Run,” well, you understand. Moreover, perfectly blended with the song Redbone one-man band (as well as man-actor, comedian and screenwriter) , Donald Glover, playing music under the pseudonym Childish Gambino.
In short, after all this action, after prolonged pressure and a powerful dynamic ending, I want to thank literally everyone who participated in the creation of the tape. And of course, to congratulate Jordan Saw a very confident start in the direction. I am delighted that the “Mind” continues to collect the loot in cinemas around the world, has become the second highest-grossing horror rated R in the entire history of American distribution. I’m happy for the success of the genre, rejoice in the emergence of new faces in it, rejoice in the fact that Drinking had started in new social Thriller, and I hope that he will not lower himself raised the bar of quality.
