Ex-US President Barack Obama condemned the administration’s decision of Donald trump to cancel the program that limits the deportation of children of illegal immigrants, calling it “self-destructive”, “cruel” and contrary to American values.
“To prosecute these young people is a mistake, because they did nothing wrong. It was self-destructive, as they create new companies, work in laboratories, serve in the army and in other ways help the country that we love. And it’s cruel.”, — reads the statement of Obama, published in his Facebook.
“Let us be clear: the action taken today was not required by law. This is a political decision and moral issue,” wrote the ex-President of the United States. According to him, despite the fact that “Americans may have different positions on the issue of immigration, we should not endanger the future of the young people who came here not of their own, which do not pose a threat, which we do not take”.
Obama noted that he was forced to make a decision on the establishment of the DACA program by presidential decree solely because of the inaction of Congress. “For years I and politicians from both parties worked on a bill that would say to these young people, our young people that if you were brought here in childhood by your parents, if you are here a certain number of years, if you want to go to College or serve in the army, you have the chance to stay and earn citizenship. For years, I asked Congress to introduce me to such a bill, this did not happen,” wrote Obama.
According to him, “Dreamers – Americans in your heart, in consciousness, and all, except one – on paper”. “They may not know another country other than our own, can not speak another language other than English,” said the precursor to the trump.
Obama implemented the program with a number of conditions were given a reprieve from possible deportation and work permits to children of illegal immigrants who arrived in the US until they have fulfilled 16 years. After approval of each individual they were issued an extension of possible action on deportation and a work permit for two years with possibility of extension.
Initially, the number of immigrants under this provision, estimated at 1.7 million people. USA as of 2016 had postponed the deportation of about 800 thousand people. More than half of them live in California and Texas.
We will remind, earlier on Tuesday, U.S. attorney General announced the administration’s decision to abolish within six months of the DACA program introduced by Barack Obama in 2012. The administration has provided to Congress six months to find an alternative program in respect of children of illegal immigrants that should be part of the declared trump U.S. immigration reform.
