New alloy dramatically reduces CO2 emissions in refining

Scientists have created a new material that is able to reduce emissions from crude oil refining and make the process more efficient. The discovery was made by researchers from the University of Sydney.

They got a brand new silicon-aluminum alloy with the highest acidity of all such alloys created up to this point. This material acts as a catalyst in oil refining and in the production of biofuels.

And this Australian scientists can reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the refinery by 28%. In any case, it argues a group of researchers led by Professor Young Huang in his article, published in Nature Communications.

New silicon-aluminum material can make the catalytic process more efficient in a wide range, “including acid and multifunctional catalysis”, the article said.

“This catalyst can significantly reduce the amount of CO2 emitted by the refinery that might make the fossil fuel industry much more environmentally friendly,” – says in the material young Huang.

That will give a new alloy global refining

“If a new catalyst has adopted all of the world’s oil refineries, the reduction of CO2 emissions the petroleum refining industry as a whole could be more than 20%,” – noted the researchers.

This silicon-aluminum alloy can even help in the production of biofuels from algae. Currently, scientists are working on production of his new material on an industrial scale.
