Unlike the usual conversation in person where emotions can be expressed through intonation, gestures or facial expressions, in a text communication, transfer of emotional context is complicated by the lack of ability to see facial expressions of the interlocutor.
However, the letters could be a lot more to tell about the other person than spoken words. For example, the lack of punctuation is not always about illiteracy, and the point at the end of sentences can be regarded as the signal that the source is not configured for companionship.
The authors of the new work tested the point role in the transfer of negative emotions in messages with a simple experiment. About 50 students were asked to rate the screenshots, short correspondence, in which was a message with dots and without.
Scientists have found that the point at the end of a short response to a suggestion or a question makes it much more dramatic and negative, and even if he is negative.
Based on these data the authors conclude that the points can serve as non-verbal means of communication for textual communication expressing emotions of the sender.
