NASA proved the interstellar origin of the unusual asteroid

Initially, the object was classified as a comet.

NASA scientists proved the interstellar origin of the unusual asteroid, which flew into the Solar system from another galaxy.

Celestial body received the designation 1I/U1 2017, where I refers interstellar, “interstellar” and the name Omwamwi.

Initially, the object was classified as a comet, but observations at ESO and other observatories revealed no any signs of cometary activity. Observations on the very large telescope of ESO in Chile and in other observatories around the world show that this unique object was traveling in space for millions of years.

It turned out that its axis asteroid rotates with a period of 7.3 hours, while its lustre is changed ten times. This means that it is elongated, its length is about ten times greater than the width. Preliminary calculations of the orbit of the asteroid showed that it was approximately from the bright star VEGA in the Northern constellation Lyra.

“Unusually large changes in brightness means that the object is very elongated: its length is about ten times greater than the width, with a complex, curved shapes. We also found that the color of this body is dark red, like the objects of the external regions of the Solar system, and confirmed the complete lack of any activity around him, not finding the slightest traces of dust,” says Karen Meech of the Institute for astronomy in Hawaii.

According to researchers, Omwamwi is a dense, perhaps a stone or even metal body, without any signs of water or ice, and its surface darkened and reddened under the impact of cosmic rays over millions of years.
