Alcohol was good for the memory
A new study by scientists from the University of Exeter in the UK have shown that alcohol can help in memorizing certain information received prior to reception of alcohol.
However, experts note that we should not forget about the negative consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, including memory impairment, mental and physical condition.
While experts can not explain the reason for this effect, but believe that alcohol may block the possibility of learning new information. So the brain has more resources for processing and storing newly received data, reinforcing long-term memory.
“The theory is that the hippocampus — a brain region critical for memory — switches over to “consolidation” of memories,” said the study’s author, Professor Celia Morgan.
The study involved 88 drinking people (31 men and 57 women aged 18-53 years). They were given the task of memorizing words. They were then divided into two groups and asked to drink as much as they like, or not to drink at all. The next day all participants were tested. Those who drank alcohol the day before, remembered more information than those who abstained.
In the second phase, participants were asked to view images on the screen. Then all also allowed to take alcohol. A day in the course of check memory information of the significant differences in the results of both groups could not be detected.
