This is stated in a study published in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews.
“What destroyed the Mayan civilization continues to be a hot topic, and researchers offer evidence: from the disease to a fatal foreign invasion”, — writes the edition.
But this study suggests that climate change caused collapse of civilization.
The researchers studied 144 inscriptions depicting violence on the monuments of the more than 30 centers of the Maya over 500 years. They then examined data on temperature and precipitation in areas of contemporary Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.
According to them, the change in the number of victims in the period between 350 and 900 years BC was significant.
At this time, the temperature rose – a very long time the Maya were living at 30 degrees Celsius, while the previous epoch was cooler by a couple degrees.
Higher temperatures probably caused two things: loss of crops, and the aggression of leaders. According to recent studies, in hot weather people become more aggressive.
Lost harvests meant that leaders could not rely on holidays or major construction to make his subjects happy. Therefore, they resorted to war as a way to maintain his power and get support from the hungry.
