Named the most popular specialities among Ukrainian students

Most often prospective students choose Philology.

This year most University students sought to enroll in Philology, the lion’s share of them are in foreign languages.

This was stated by the Minister of education and science, Liliya Hrynevych.

“Of course, here the main contribution – foreign Philology. People tend to learn foreign languages is, in principle, correctly,” – said the Minister.

On the second place on popularity is the right.

“Then management, medicine, computer science, tourism. Next comes the secondary education teachers, psychology, Economics and software engineering” – said Grinevich.

The list of specialties on which was filed the fewest statements of the applicants, and was technological specialties, and also theology and religious studies.

“There is, of course, the least popular specialties. Among them: theology, hydropower, religion, shipbuilding, woodworking and furniture technology, nuclear power, hydraulic engineering, water engineering. That is, technological skills, which we really need, this list of unpopular majors,” said the Minister.

She noted that the number of applications also need to correlate with the needs on the labour market.

“There are specialties such as museology, heritage studies, avionics and so on. It is very important to understand exactly how much we on the labour market need such professionals. Today in Ukraine there are enough of the correct tools for the prediction of the situation on the labour market. They need to develop. For example, we now want to develop with the Polish partners a tool that is there already works successfully for the analysis of the employment history of graduates. That is exactly where the graduates find themselves after graduation and where I find place in the labour market in their field. First, it is useful for understanding the relationship between the education system and the labour market. Secondly, we will be able to evaluate the work of universities. Because the diplomas in the same specialty in different universities differently perceived by employers. Employers see, for example, one University provides a really professional staff and the other produces people with diplomas, but without sufficient preparation. We have more work to do,” – said Grinevich.

The Parliament adopted the law “On education” offers to create a bridge between the labour market and the education system – the so-called national centre for professional qualifications.

“This center is designed to collect information from the labour market on contemporary professional standards, to be reflected in educational standards. We must respond to the needs of the labour market. In civilized countries where there is a progressive educational system, updated standards of education in accordance with the update of professional standards. For example, a programmer or an expert on cyber security, and other specialties. Life goes on, in the labour market, new requirements for such specialists. The education system must respond,” – said Grinevich.
