According to experts, are caused by underwater landslides.
A group of scientists from the Norwegian geotechnical at the University of Oslo have established the reasons for the emergence of a giant tsunami, which reaches a height of 20 meters.
According to the experts, such tsunamis arise from underwater landslides, shifting of large areas of the seabed.
The full text of the study about this was published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
In the study, researchers created two models, the task of which was to reproduce the processes with different results. In the first case described retrogressive landslide with sequential gathering of individual blocks. The other – causing the gathering of the blocks as a whole.
In the end, it turned out that to produce a giant tsunami can only landslides of the second type.
This study can help to identify the movement of seabed and to learn about the possibility of a new tsunami-“the monster”. Currently at risk is New Zealand, where the planned drilling operations to ascertain the nature of ground motion.
