Microsoft selectively blocking the updates for older versions of Windows

Microsoft began to block the updates for older versions of Windows on new processors

Last January in his blog, Microsoft said that it will no longer support the latest generation of processors on older versions of operating systems, including Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Then this list included Intel Skylake, whose support was to be terminated July 17, 2017.

Of course, Microsoft has received not the most enjoyable reviews on this intention, so in the end support Skylake was extended for a year, and in August came the promise to continue to support these processors, as before. However, the same cannot be said about the latest generations of Intel and AMD Kaby Lake Ryzen.

This week there appeared information that the computers on these processors have stopped getting updates for Windows 7 and 8.1. Microsoft warned about this a few months ago, but affected users is probably of little comfort. Windows 8.1 is still at the stage of standard support, which will be discontinued on 9 January 2018, to be followed by extended support.

Standard support means that the system can be added to functional updates, whereas in extended support are released only security updates. Standard support for Windows 7 has been discontinued in January 2015, the extended it will last until January 2020.
