Microsoft and Facebook have created a superfast submarine cable. Video

Now to transfer files through the world wide web will be much faster.

Microsoft, Facebook and telecommunications Corporation Telxius completed the establishment of Marea, the most technologically advanced submarine cable to date. It is reported by Popular mechanics.

Marea crosses the Atlantic ocean at a depth of more than 5200 meters below sea level, connecting Virginia beach with Bilbao, in Spain. The length of this engineering marvel is as much as 6 600 km, and the total weight of the order of 4.65 million pounds.

Marea can transmit up to 160 terabits of data per second, which, according to Microsoft, more than 16 million times faster than the average home Internet connection that allows you to simultaneously broadcast 71 million video clips in HD.

By 2025, it is expected eight-fold increase in traffic on current digital services, and therefore the potential of the new cable will be implemented at 100%.

An important advantage of Marea is the fact that in the future it will be possible to customize and configure to communicate with various network devices. Currently, Microsoft presents a range of cloud services that the company plans to improve through Marea from Bing and Office 365 to Skype and Xbox Live. For Facebook Marea is primarily interesting as a tool that will allow the social network to support the VR interface.

Rafael Arranz, chief operating officer Telxius, in the previous statement had mentioned that all modern applications, especially those related to the videos, consume huge network resources. To ensure their correct operation, you must bind each service to a high-performance system with high capacity.

The impetus for the creation of cable was hurricane sandy, which in 2012 caused a massive violation of network communications, and left US without Internet and phone connection for a few days.

“It was a serious incident, says Frank Rey, Director of global online strategy division of Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Operations, in a press statement. The entire network between North America and Europe were isolated for several hours. The hurricane revealed a potential problem in the consolidation of the transatlantic cable, which was localized in new York and new Jersey”.

After meeting with the leaders of Facebook at the meetings, the company eventually agreed to join forces to create a powerful and reliable cable. Work began last year in August 2016.
