Found the remains of a giant sloth that lived 10,000 years ago.
Mexican scientists announced the discovery of the fossilized remains of a previously unknown species of giant sloths.
Part of the skeleton of an animal that lived about ten thousand years ago, was discovered deep at the bottom flooded with water sinkholes. The find was made in 2010, however, due to difficulties with the recovery of remains only scientists eventually managed to create a General picture of the opening. This was yesterday, 16 August, said the representatives of the National Institute of anthropology and history of Mexico.
To date, the researchers were able to extract on the surface of the skull, the jaw, the part of the vertebrae, ribs, claws and other remains of a prehistoric animal, but the main part of the skeleton of the sloth continues to be under water at a depth of approximately 50 metres.
Scientists plan to extract the remaining dice in 2018, and then to collect the entire skeleton together like a puzzle.
According to researchers, the sloth fell into the funnel, when it was still dry or covered with water only at the bottom. Discovered a scientific name Xibalbaonyx oviceps, and found the sloth was given the nickname “the Pot”.
Sinkholes, or cenotes, are widespread in the territory of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The Mayans called them “the gates to the realm of the dead” and considered their waters sacred.
