German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking about the annexation of the Crimea, recalled the story of the unification of Germany, in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung.
Earlier, the leader of the Free democratic party of Germany, Christian Lindner, has offered Europe to close their eyes to the annexation of Crimea to improve relations with Russia. He was supported by a Chancellor candidate from the party, Alternative for Germany, Alexander Gauland.
“If I, for example, you hear that you just need to recognize the Russian annexation of the Crimea, I think: what would have happened if us then in East Germany would be such an attitude, under the motto “Germany divided, there is nothing to change,” said Merkel in an interview, stressing that the issue cannot be frozen.
The Chancellor added that he is very courageous stand those people in the GDR who “were willing to hold the entire country” and lead her to unite.
