German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President of France Emmanuel macron urged the presidents of Ukraine Poroshenko and Russia Vladimir Putin to fulfill its commitments on the ceasefire in the East of Ukraine.
This is stated in the joint statement of the German Chancellor and the French President on the situation in the Donbass, published on the official website of the German government (Bundesregierung) on Monday, August 28.
“We demand from President Putin and President Poroshenko to implement fully their commitments publicly and clearly to promote and ensure the ceasefire, and to ensure the transfer of appropriate instructions to the military and local forces,” – said in a statement.
France and Germany regret that after the last telephone conversations of the leaders of “Norman Quartet” (France, Germany, Ukraine, Russia) on 22 August, “the security situation in Eastern Ukraine has not improved significantly”.
“Despite General support for four leaders of the… new agreement on the ceasefire signed by the Trilateral contact group, not implemented fully. There are still numerous cases of ceasefire violations, including the use of heavy weapons. Mission of observers of OSCE also informs about the threats to their staff and restrictions on freedom of movement, especially in areas not controlled by the government of Ukraine”, – said in a statement.
Merkel and the Makron is also recommended to improve cooperation within the framework of the JCCC for the cessation of hostilities and urge all parties to provide the OSCE mission safe and unhindered access. “We will continue to monitor the situation in coming days,” – said in a statement.
