MediaTek is going to expand the market and develop new products.
Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek, the second largest manufacturer of mobile processors after Qualcomm, in 2018 intends to expand its presence in foreign markets and to develop new product categories, reducing the dependence on smartphones. Plans for the final briefing at the end of the year said the company’s co-Director Rick Tsai (Rick Tsai).
“MediaTek is able to not only develop chips for smartphones… We have a wide range of technologies. This year we register more than 20 percent growth in chips for emerging product categories such as smart speakers with voice control, bickering (public Bicycle rental), and other connected devices,” said Rick Tsai.
According to a top Manager in the next year or two chips for these emerging categories will bring the company more than 30% of its total revenue, while in 2017 the contribution of this product was over 20%. In the revenue structure of MediaTek most significant portion of the occupy chips for mobile devices – they account for about 40% of the total sales of the company.
Also MediaTek aims to extend the list of its partners and to cooperate not only with Chinese companies but also with foreign customers. Earlier in mass media appeared information that in 2018 MediaTek could become a supplier of modems for the iPhone in the deteriorating relationship between Apple and its former supplier Qualcomm.
Rick Tsai declined to comment on rumors of a possible partnership with the American Corporation, but noted that MediaTek plans to increase investments in the US, where Taiwanese chip maker underrepresented and to expand the staff in the country. According to a top Manager in the United States from MediaTek about 600 employees, most of whom are engaged in research and development. In total the company employs about 16 thousand people.
MediaTek is supplying its products to almost all the leading Chinese smartphone brands, including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Meizu and Gionee. Also, the chips Taiwanese vendor buys Samsung for devices of medium and budget class.
In addition, MediaTek is supplying processors for popular smart speaker Amazon Echo Dot and a similar device called Tianmao Jingling manufactured by Chinese Internet giant Alibaba.
MediaTek lays great hope on a smart speaker, whose popularity is growing. According to the company, it controls more than 70% of the market of chips designed for smart speakers. In 2018 MediaTek expects at least double-digit growth market of smart speakers.
