What meat products often make people sick? Read the ranking compiled by American experts.
Chicken and ground beef – the same meat products that often lead consumers to the hospital bed. Human rights organization Center for science in the public interest (CSPI) made the Top meat products depending on their ability to cause disease.
At the top of the list was chicken. According to statistics, in 1998 and 2010, chicken products, including roasted chicken, caused 452 outbreaks of foodborne diseases and 6896 cases in the United States. The ground beef came in second place: this product caused the outbreak and 336 3801 case of the disease in the same period of time.
Then there are beef steaks and Turkey meat which were responsible for 130 and 82 outbreaks, respectively. Sausages, pork and roast beef are products of the middle level (caused from 60 to 130 outbreaks) while ham, sausage and chicken nuggets were the most harmless (caused from 34 to 57 outbreaks), according to the report.
The most common cause of the disease was bacteria Salmonella and E coli. These pathogens often fall into meat products during slaughter or during meat processing. No less dangerous is wrong to store meat products or prepare them with violation of sanitary norms — these reasons are responsible for one third of disease.
