Lviv surgeons managed to form a 9-year-old Nazar Hatiku with osteosarcoma of the leg with his own bones. A malignant tumor, which quickly “eats” the bone was insensitive to chemotherapy and ruined the child a large piece of femur. According to doctors, in such cases do the amputation.
However, Lviv orthopedic surgeons performed the surgery and saved the boy’s limb.
9-year-old Baptist originally from the village Teisariv zhidachivskogo district. Summer jumped from the first floor, but landed badly. Parents about the jump didn’t say anything, but two weeks later started to limp. The boy was painful to tread on the foot and he did x-rays.
The doctor immediately gave direction to Lviv in Western Ukrainian specialized children’s medical centre where the baby was diagnosed with a tumor. Instead of amputation, the surgeons decided to compete for the leg of Nazar.
The operation was planned to take place in late autumn, but before the boy had to undergo chemotherapy. However, had to operate much faster.
“Some tumors are insensitive to chemotherapy, it has no effect on them. So was the case with Nazar. To delay the operation was impossible as the tumor continued to destroy the lower part of the femur,” explained children’s orthopedist-traumatologist of the highest category, candidate of medical Sciences Alexander schurovskiy.
A few years ago at a conference colleague from Spain told him about the new methodology of operations in such cases. For the first time to conduct such an operation, the surgeons decided in Lviv.
It is noted that Nazar removed part destroyed by the tumor of the femur. With a healthy took the legs fibula together with the vessel, combined it with a lower and upper part of the femur that is left, and the vessel of the fibula made with the vessels of the thigh, to give the opportunity for bones to eat.
Fibula is pretty thin, and therefore, to increase its stability and resistance legs, a remote part of the bone thermally treated and used as a framework. That is, within fibula (primary) and the old (cleaned) – from the outside. Over time, the bone is rebuilt and formed normal strong.
Now the bones are recorded by a special apparatus which Nazar will have to walk for a while.
Operation, through which the boy will walk with their feet, lasted 11 hours.
“Now I think it’s good that the son jumped out of the window because the jump was the impetus for the manifestation of the disease. If it were not for the jump, the tumor would have quietly did the dirty work, destroying the bone and knows when to be manifested and what would be the consequences,” said his mother Natalia.
