LG will start shipping OLED displays for iPhone

In 2018, LG will be able to produce only a small number of OLED-screens for the iPhone.

One of the reasons for the high cost of the upcoming smartphone with the assumed name of iPhone 8 KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (Ming-Chi Kuo) said that Samsung is the sole supplier of OLED displays for Apple. In his note to investors, the analyst pointed out the approximate cost of the OLED display for the iPhone 8 in the range of $120 to $130 per unit, which is much more expensive $45–$55, which Apple is said to pay for a 5.5-inch LCD screen for the iPhone 7 Plus.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is in dire need of an alternative supplier of OLED displays, which greatly increased her chances of reducing the price of these products when bargaining with Samsung.

However, according to the resource Bloomberg, a possible alternative supplier of OLED panels, LG is not yet everything goes so smoothly with this direction, as we would like. So Apple may be forced to operate with Samsung longer than anticipated.

According to sources Bloomberg, Apple will depend on Samsung as the sole supplier of OLED displays until at least 2019, when LG plans to start mass production of OLED panels. It is reported that currently the company is negotiating with Apple over the details of payment of future supplies of new products.

However, LG still managed to solve all the problems with the production of OLED panels. The yield rate of products does not correspond to the requirements of Apple. And besides, LG is not yet provided with a sufficient amount of equipment for production of OLED panels because of competition with Samsung.

Bloomberg says that in 2018, LG will be able to produce only a small number of OLED-screens for the iPhone. Alternatively, Apple could start next year production of some models next-gen iPhone with OLED screens from LG, but the large supply of such displays from LG can be expected only in 2019.
