Large-scale projects of the Soviet Union, which failed to realize. Photo

The cold war began for the USSR, a difficult challenge.

However, the growing tension of international relations with America allowed the Soviet Union to make a giant leap industrial: during the development of technology, which in turn demanded material support. Monumental buildings of that time and to this day the dead towering giants throughout the former Soviet Union. Secret underground bases-meter antenna, even a hadron Collider — these monuments of the obsolete era really can hit anyone.

Oil rocks

Perhaps one of the most amazing monuments of a bygone era. The village on stilts “Oil rocks” was built on the East of Azerbaijan in 1949. This fully self contained settlement, with all necessary people infrastructure. Now no oil production here, of course, is not conducted, but about 2 thousand people continue to call “Oil rocks” home.

Station study the ionosphere

Engineers of the Soviet Union has developed a station according to the drawings of the American project HAARP, located in Alaska. That’s just our complex is distinguished by a truly large scale — the diameter of a single parabolic antenna was as much as 25 meters. However, the station suffered a sad fate: in 1985 it belonged to the new state, Ukraine. While understood that to what, most of the equipment, local people took just for precious metals.

The Complex Proton

You hardly know what the Soviet Union tried to build your own hadron Collider before it became fashionable. In 1983, the construction research Institute “proton” in Protvino was nearing completion: at a depth of 60 meters was laid, even the main ring of the Collider of the Soviet long which is more than 21 kilometers. Unfortunately, a year later, the Soviet Union ordered to live long, and in the ensuing confusion, the new government wasn’t up to some kind of physics.

Submarine base

In Soviet times this place was designated on the secret maps only as an “object 825 GTS”. It was here, near Balaklava housed a submarine base. The facility was built in 1961, the programme on strengthening anti-nuclear defense of the country. You can only get inside through a tunnel or the Northern part of the mountain Tavros, and both doors had a thorough disguise and was waterproof. The territory was occupied by as many as 5100 square meters: own hospital, its own bakery and even its own sports centre. In case of an attack on the country of a potential enemy, on the basis of easily housed the entire population of Balaklava, and supplies enough for three years.

Station Chernobyl-2

In 1985 was built the monumental over-the-horizon radar “Duga”. This structure was required to detect possible launches of Intercontinental ballistic missiles. Antenna rise up to 150 meters and the whole area is as much as 160 kilometers. After the accident at the Chernobyl station had to leave today object called “Chernobyl-2” is only a lure for the daring tourists.
