Kherson region threatened by a dangerous pest

The locust is a threat to the Kherson region.

In Crimea, the pest mentioned in the Bible, discovered in Soviet Dzhankoy and Krasnoperekopsk districts on the area of 1,214 hectares.

Their average number is 59, the insect sq m and a maximum (310 larvae per sq m) recorded on the area of 85 ha and situated in the Soviet district of the Peninsula.

Asian locusts, writes the newspaper “Vgoru”, causes great damage to agriculture: “she has a monstrous appetite, she eats all the vegetation, out of the way: wheat, rye, sugar beet, tobacco, barley, clover, beans, sorghum, peas, rice, millet, soy, beans, oats, cucumbers, corn, alfalfa, poppy, hemp, potatoes, cabbage, melons, hops, and fruits of shrubs. In the region subjected to a plague of locusts, there may be hunger.”

According to media reports, the invaders had caught the plane from the Krasnodar region, with which special preparations are sprayed with the infected area. However, the heat is stopping the fight, because the poison works at a temperature of 27 degrees and below.

In the Kherson region already there were cases of the infestation. According to the chief specialist of the Department for phytosanitary security of the region Natalia Rozeluk, the last occurred two years ago. Fortunately, the crops didn’t hurt.

“Insects are affected mainly land, which for a long time are not processed – the territory of the reserve “Askania Nova” and its surroundings, the so-called buffer zone,” she said.

Now, however, has already begun the process of emergence of the larvae, but in the field is seen only single individuals, and therefore is a threat to the migratory locust from the Crimea. However, Rozeluk assured that the experts will be able to contain it.
