For 50 years the island was one of the most densely populated places on Earth — 5259 people per square km (1959) at the coastline of the island about 1 km.

Through decades of thriving coal mining Hasime fell into disrepair, and in 1974 Mitsubishi closed the mine completely. In a few weeks when the most populous place on earth is completely empty. All the inhabitants left the island due to dwindling resources, and the city turned into a Ghost town.
