Announcements of our materials we broadcast on Twitter the memory, so follow us, Twitterers! But we use Twitter not only for this, but also in order to get in touch with foreign leaders, of horror. That is how we met in her time with the actress and Director of indie-horror, Jessica Cameron, and recently also via Twitter we were contacted by the American Director Ben Sottak (Ben Sottak), whose frightening and well-shot creation “From Below” and “You Belong To The Mordeo Now” we have published in the top of spooky shorts. Dude is only 23 years old and he is “in a Board”. The result of our own was an exclusive interview, the translation of which you can read here, and the version in English – on a separate page.

And here’s a bonus: exclusive top horror films according to Ben Sottak!

But first recall that what we value Ben:

First, tell us a little about yourself and your career Director.

I am a 23-year-old Director living and working in new York. I have always been interested in the theme of monsters, monsters and scary stories, and, in my opinion, film is the best way to convey these feelings to the viewer. Here in new York, I was surrounded by many talented actors and filmmakers who are eager to tell scary stories with me, and we hope to continue to pursue the case.

Most modern horror makers like James WAN or a shirt Flanagan, also started his career with short films. And you ever want to shoot a feature film, or your ideas suits the short form?

James WAN and Mike Flanagan are my heroes. Directing a feature-length horror films were always my main goal. Will these polnometrazhki to grow out my short films is still not clear. All my videos was conceived as a small rehearsal, developing my directing skills. I am proud of them, but I doubt that any of them may become a full-fledged film. But I have many other stories that it will come down to an entire movie, and I can’t wait show them to the audience. And I am definitely sure that you will hardly find someone who has allocated money for the expansion of ideas “From Below” or “Octopus Man”

It is impossible not to notice that your movies usually focus on memorable monsters. What’s your favorite?

I love each of your monsters. They’re like my “nightmare” kids! But, if you choose, I would say the biggest and evil: the Kraken. Due to such impressive sizes, none of my other monsters would not have jumped this guy. And if I tried, he would have collapsed on them, the power of its huge tentacles. The Kraken – king in my book.

You yourself invent these monsters?

Yes, sometimes myself! In my future short film “Frederik Remembers” all the ghosts invented by me. I like to do sketches and make up stories, of which there is most of my monsters. In the work on “From Below” and “Immortal Masks” we used Hyper-detailed mask, developed by great companies and Composite Effects, Immortal Masks, which are just incredible artists.

In one of your movies is being called Mordeo. What is Mordeo? You come up with this monster or does it have its own history?

Mordeo created based on the native American legend of the wendigo. I really sympathize with mythological creatures and I wanted to mention this well-known legend, which has still not got a decent translate to the screen. The word “mordeo” in Latin means “to devour”, which allowed to add in the video the theme of cannibalism and helped with the creation of a story of the early European settlers associated with these mysterious creatures.

At least two of your work (“Shipwrecked” and “Octopus Man”) associated with the subject of sea monsters. Obviously they were inspired by the works of H. p. Lovecraft. What attracts you to this subject?

So glad you noticed the influence of Lovecraft on my work! Lovcraftian horror scares and impresses me. His prose talks about the fear of the unknown, but on our planet there is nothing more unknown than the ocean. It is unlimited scope for fancy, inexplicable and incredible monsters. For example, a giant unidentified creature that last week showed up on the shores of Indonesia, no one knows what it is. Some of the most creepy and scary looking creatures living on the bottom of the sea, which makes them wonderful candidates for getting into scary stories. I have some knowledge about this topic, because I grew up on the Caribbean sea. I was diving with an aqualung, jellyfish clung to me in hand, I swam with sharks and barracudas. In short, spent the defining years of their lives side by side with the real sea monsters, and the result was a huge inspiration for my work. In the sea for me there is something frightening and familiar, and I shall never cease to associate with him my stories. And one of my biggest dreams remains to have a large budget for the film adaptation of something from Lovecraft. Of course, in the first place – “the Call of Cthulhu” and “the Ranges of Madness”!

In your Twitter you said that your career was inspired by “Evil dead 2” with Sam Raimi. Who and what else was your source of inspiration?

Sam “the Man” Raimi really makes me very inspired. But there are many other Directors whose work has influenced my work: Ti West, Eli Roth, Karyn Kusama, John carpenter and Jeremy Saunier. They are all masters of genre cinema. In addition to filmmakers, I draw inspiration and writers of horror. As I have said, was greatly influenced by the works of H. p. Lovecraft. But my favorite author will forever be Stephen king. How he skillfully intervenes supernatural horror to real life with thoughtful characters is incredible. From recent works I was struck by the work of nick cutter, which looks like a cross between Lovecraft and king. Well, it is not possible to list all the artists whose work has influenced me the most.

From your point of view what the future holds for the genre of horror?

Horror is currently experiencing an impressive revival. Such masterpieces as “Off”, “Witch” and “It’s after you”, make a profit and were approved by critics, which confirms the existence of fresh ideas, incredible level of craftsmanship and uniqueness of creating scary stories. In this genre has always been their founders, the movies which exceeded expectations and were able to say something new. But the success of the above pictures proves that such phenomena are no longer merely exceptions to the rule. You can make a “blast” masterpiece like “Off” and it will be warmly received by the audience and critics. Now really is an exciting time for the genre, both from the point of view of a fan and Creator.
