In Zaporozhye recorded elevated levels of radiation

Doctors claim that the level of radiation does not pose a threat to health.

In the Zaporozhye region recorded the presence of ruthenium-106 in the air, while its concentration does not pose a threat to public health.

According to the radiological laboratory, the presence of radioisotopes of Ruthenium-106 in October were registered in both Ukraine and in Switzerland, Poland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and France.

In the Zaporozhye region during the same period, it was found that the concentration of ruthenium in the air is 8-10 MBq per cubic. meter.

“Fixed concentration hundreds of times lower than the permissible level, so in no way affects the health of the population”, – assured the doctors.

While the Ministry of health reported that they continue to monitor the situation and to control the level of hazardous substances in the air.

As known, ruthenium-106 is a radioactive element with a half life of 367 days. According to the Norms of radiation safety of Ukraine (NRBU-97), the allowable concentration in atmospheric air of Ruthenium-106 is 500 MBq/cubic meter.

I should add that the toxicity of ruthenium-106 is in the same row with Cesium-137 (one of the elements from which injured people as a result of the Chernobyl accident). When ingested, the isotope accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs.
