The military-industrial complex of Russia in the last couple of years is inherently weaker than he was before.
Today the Russian army is strong enough to defend Russia, but if the Kremlin wants to create conflict in other countries, it will be a serious challenge.
In an interview with “Apostrophe” said senior researcher and Director of the Center for political-military analysis at the Hudson Institute in Washington, an expert on U.S. national security, arms control, nuclear non-proliferation Richard Weitz.
According to him, the Russian military-industrial complex is recovered from the problems of twenty years ago, when he was corrupt.
“They (the Russians – ed.) are trying to master the manufacture of products for non-military purposes. The collapse of the Soviet Union undermined closely integrated with its neighbors industrial projects including cooperation with Ukraine. For them it was a challenge to gather again this allied integrated structure of the command economy,” said Weitz.
He added that now Russia is the second largest exporter of military goods in the world and receives positive rating in India, in China.
“After the sanctions came into force in 2014, the Russians admitted that they lost access to certain Western technologies that try to substitute through domestic production or cooperation with China. And it seems that they succeed,” – said the expert.
He stressed that the main challenge facing the Russian economy, which is suffering after the introduction of sanctions and falling oil prices. Thus, the slowdown of the Russian economy has created limitations for the expenditure of Russia on defense.
“The implementation of some important projects delayed: stealth fighter (stealth fighter – “Apostrophe”), the tank “Armata” and other. And it’s still not clear whether Russia without Ukraine is soon to build a new aircraft carrier,” said Weitz.
The expert believes that the military-industrial complex of Russia in the last couple of years is inherently weaker than he was before.
“The Russian economy is weaker and it produces less income for the military industrial complex. But, of course, Russia has enough to defend itself. They can develop a really good technology, just less than they need. The Russian army is strong enough to defend Russia, so this should not be a problem. If they want to start a conflict in another country, it will be a challenge,” he concluded.
