It seems, AST-shnaya series “the Dark tower” obsessed megaverse collections. Previously, there were published only the Great and Terrible Stephen king, but then suddenly went anthologies: “the Book of horror” by Stephen Jones (or John Stephens, as he was called publishers), “Evening light” by Richard Chizmar, “a New book of horror” Jones. And now the turn of another collection, where the King of Terrors is just one little story.
The book is called “In the sun or in the shade” (In Sunlight or in Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper), and this is a very interesting project, edited by Lawrence Block. Here the literature is to be found with the art, because all the stories of the collection inspired by the works of the famous painter Edward hopper.
Seventeen short stories of the famous masters of American literature, inspired by the works of one of the most notable artists of the twentieth century, Edward hopper (1882-1967). No wonder he was called “poet of empty spaces” and “a dreamer without illusions” — each of his works is infused with loneliness, a sad innuendo and hidden, almost irrational anxiety. Hopper’s paintings do not tell stories, but only hint at them — which is why the authors of the book created as if “literary illustration” of these paintings.
Among most of these authors ‘ literary illustrations of the many respected names: Joyce Carol Oates, Lee child, Joe R. Lansdale, Jeffrey Deaver, Michael Connelly and others. In General, the composition is very decent. About Stephen king you haven’t forgotten? From him does the story “the Music room”.

The book was good by today’s edition of 7,000 copies. Hard cover, 352 pages and most importantly – there is a color insert with reproductions of paintings by hopper. You culturally enlightened in two ways.

Perhaps the most gloomy picture — “a Room in new York” — have chosen Stephen king that gave the collection a sinister story about the family of Enderby and their way to survive during the great depression.
The most exquisite — “Eleven am” — inspired “living classic” of American literature Joyce Carol Oates on an elegant and ruthless history, where virtually erased the fine line between love, hatred and… a crime.
And the famous “night Owls” — “got” Michael Connelly. And rightly so: who is not a lover of jazz, detective Harry Bosch trying to solve the mystery of this painting?
Also in the works of Edward hopper breathed “the literary life” by Jeffrey Deaver, Lee child and Lawrence Block. Although, perhaps, the reader will see in his paintings “his” story that will wait to be told…
Finally, we present here the introductory fragment, which included a Foreword by Lawrence Block and a little “Striptease” from Megan Abbott. The book has already been sold, so you can find it easily. At least in online stores.
