In the Odessa region archaeologists have discovered a unique artifact

Archaeologists found the mattock of antler, of which 7 thousand years .

A valuable artifact was found by the participants of the archaeological expedition of the Odessa University of Mechnikov and our archaeological Museum is a multilayer monument of mill hill near the village Sabatynivka on the southern bug.

It is beautifully preserved on the hoe, made of antler in Neolithic times (about 7 thousand years ago). She was found second-year students of the faculty of history of ONU Michael Samofatov and Anna Zhilenko, the head of the expedition, candidate of historical Sciences Dmitry Kiosk.

According to the scientist, the tools are not made of stone — generally a rare find on the monuments of the Neolithic, but in this case is particularly important as the hoes. Thanks to him, archaeologists can accurately date the layer studied.

“The safety of things from the previous excavations is poor. Most were so dry that they had bonding, impregnating adhesive. And it is extremely difficult to any chemical analysis in the future, — said the archaeologist. — This finding is almost in perfect condition, and we are finally using radiocarbon Dating will be able to get her exact date”.

According to Kisaka, this information will help you figure out exactly when people of the Neolithic came to the shore of the southern bug and who they really were: farmers or gatherers.

“More recently, the hoes of this type are perceived by far as an agricultural tool designed for loosening of soil. Subsequently, however, the mapping of such artifacts in Europe revealed that they are more characteristic of mobile groups of hunters and gatherers and are known in the villages of farmers only where the latter came in contact with the crystal-hunters. Probably last used them for obtaining of edible roots. Valley of the southern bug – one of such contact regions, and perhaps the opening of the Odessa students ‘records the episode of ancient intercultural contacts”.

As told by the students themselves find what they did in the least promising search area and initially took the hoe normal bone.

“Anya cleared the discovery, and it became clear that the horn was treated. It neatly drilled a hole for the nozzle on the handle, — said Mikhail Samofatov. Even in our archaeological Museum still was not so ancient hoes of horns.”
