Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky changed the name.
Session Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky city Council voted to return the city’s historic name of Pereiaslav, which he received at the time of its founding.
Now the deputies will appeal to the Kyiv regional Council to make a submission to the Verkhovna Rada for the renaming of the city.
The decision in Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi explained that during the Second world war, renaming the town, the ideologues of Stalinism sought to “uproot the tree its thousand-year history and transplanted into an artificial pot of 1943”.
“All the insidious colonial policy of “big brother” was the fact that adding to the name of our city glorious name of the leader of the national liberation revolution of the Ukrainian people of 1648-1657 PP. Bohdan Khmelnytsky, they wanted to “cut off” from the Pereyaslav national historical origins of Kievan Rus”, – deputies noted.
