Metals can enter the atmosphere of Mars from the outside as the products of combustion colliding with the planet of asteroids. These elements are constantly present in the gas shell of a celestial body.
Metals in the atmosphere of Mars has not been distributed in layers, as in the gas shell of the Earth. This is due to the lack of a Mars global magnetic field, causing the concentration of ions in the atmosphere of the planet high only in areas where strong local magnetic fields of celestial bodies.
Experts plan to study the effect of metals on the formation and behavior of high-altitude clouds. Earlier in the gaseous envelopes of the planets of the Solar system (besides Earth) is allowed only the existence of metals.
The main objective of the MAVEN mission is to determine the rate of efflux of gases (oxygen and hydrogen) from the Martian atmosphere. This will allow scientists to estimate the amount of water that loses its planet. Specialists are also interested in the climate of Mars, the data that is needed for manned missions.
