In Kiev in a big way celebrate carnival: posted pics

Ukrainians were burned in effigy and banished the winter.

In the last days before the beginning of lent Ukrainians traditionally celebrate one of the most fun and “delicious” folk festivals — carnival.

The custom of celebrating the Shrove Tuesday originates from ancient times. The pagan Slavs in this period celebrated the spring festival — the meeting of spring and farewell to winter. It was believed that those who refuse from festivals, to live “in bitter trouble and bad end”. Our ancestors celebrated Shrovetide by sledging, ignition of fires and eating of pancakes – the symbol of the sun.

The photographer in “the Kievan Rus Park” watched as the people of Kiev from the heart participated in fun games. There were theatrical performances involving horse-trick of the theatre and knights ‘ battles, children and adults entertained outside of the traditional pancake post, drew a rope, played in the ancient games and danced. The culmination of the celebration was the fire shows the burning of a large effigy of, as well as the eating pancakes and dumplings.
