In Denmark, archaeologists made a unique discovery

Scientists have found an ancient Viking fortress.

Danish archaeologists found a previously unknown Viking fortress, built in the late 10th century.

The new fortress, named Burgring, located on the Danish island of Zealand, South of Copenhagen.

The fortress itself is almost a perfect circle with an outer diameter of 144 meters. The outer ramparts were built of earth and wood. Judging by the age of the trees, the fortress was built between 970 and 980 years.

“It was a bit of a detective story. I have been working with circular locks, and I came to the conclusion, that we know of the fortress is highly illogical. There were gaps in the network of well-known fortresses. There, the idea was to place other fortifications,” says Soren Sindbaek, an archaeologist from Aarhus University in Denmark.

Scientists were able to find in Borringe silver bracelet, carpentry tools and other tools with which the inhabitants of the fortress were closed the hole in its shaft and palisade. In addition, the Vikings, apparently, lived in this castle for several generations. It is noted that the fortress was abandoned after the battles, since two of the four gates of the fortifications were burned.

“The ring is the perfect shape for strength. It is a form which covers the largest area within the smallest circle. But there is no need to make it a perfect circle, and is what distinguishes this Fort. We think that king Harald Bluetooth, who ordered to build Barging, aspired to something greater,” explained Soren Sindbaek.
