Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on August 15 announced the completion of a 52-year-old conflict with leftist rebel group “Revolutionary armed forces of Colombia” (FARC) and its final disarmament. About it reports a press-service of the head of state.
“Today begins the construction of a new country,” he said during a ceremony in the village of Ondores, which was attended by international observers, government and military leaders of the FARC.
Representatives of the United Nations adopted the rebels the last two containers of weapons and explosives. According to the newspaper El Tiempo, the FARC forces surrendered 8112 firearms and 1.3 million rounds of ammunition, disarmed about 6.8 thousand fighters.
26 September 2016 the President of Colombia and leader of the Marxist movement FARC Rodrigo Londono (Tymoshenko) signed an agreement terminating the armed confrontation.
However, in a referendum held on 2 October, more than half of the population voted against approval of the plan of the peace agreement of the government with the rebels.
In mid-November, the government and the rebels signed a new contract.
The Nobel Committee has awarded the Colombian leader a peace prize 2016 for “his determined efforts to end the country has more than half a century of civil war.”
