In Bulgaria, scientists have discovered a sensational find

Found rare Byzantine icon of ivory.

Archaeologists have discovered at Burgas (Bulgaria) a rare icon of the X century, carved from ivory.

Artifact found during the excavations of the fortress Rusokastro. It was here in 1331 held the largest battle of the troops of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander with the army of the Byzantine Emperor Andronicus III Palaeologus.

“This is an extremely rare and significant find,” reads the statement of the Museum of Burgas.

The icon, as scientists believe, belonged to the Byzantine ruler, or one of his family members. On the front side of the icon depicts the Archangel Gabriel and St. Basil the Great.

On the reverse side of the icon of ivory depicts two cross. Archaeologists found out that the icon is part of the composition depicting the Annunciation of the virgin Mary.
