48% of Russians do not consider Stalin a state criminal

25% of Russians believe Stalin’s repressions historically justified, 39% of Russian citizens believe that the repression of political crime that has no justification. These are the findings of a poll conducted by the Levada center.

Thus, according to the similar poll by the Levada center in 2012, those who consider the Stalinist repression of crime, was 51%, and justify them 22% of Russians.

About half of Russians believe that “it is better to talk about these repressions less, no need to rake up the past” (47%). 38% of Russians, on the contrary, believe that “it is necessary to actively discuss what happened in those years, not to forget their history.” In 2012, the ratio was 37% to 49%.

According to the survey, over a third of respondents (36%) believe human sacrifice justified the objectives and results that have been achieved in the shortest possible time in the Stalin era. 49% believe that they are inexcusable.

The survey was conducted from 21 to 24 April 2017 on a representative nationwide sample of urban and rural population among 1600 people aged 18 years and older in 137 localities of the 48 regions of the Russian Federation. The study was conducted in the home of Respondent by personal interview. The statistical error in the sample of 1600 people (with probability 0.95) does not exceed: 3.4 per cent for indicators close to 50%, and 2.9% for indicators close to 25% / 75%, 2.0% for indicators close to 10% / 90%, 1,5% for indicators close to 5% / 95%.
