Romanian tennis player Simona Halep repeated the achievement of Serena Williams, becoming a two-time champion of the clay tournament in Madrid Premier Mandatory series.
For its 15th title in his career Halep competed with France’s Kristina Mladenovic, who has the best season in his career, and the victory in Madrid would have made its interim leader of Champion race WTA.
During the first set Halep has twice lost a break, but when the score was 3:5 have won four games in a row and came close to the title. In the second set, Mladenovic was able to take revenge – French recouped from the account 0:2, and in the tiebreak gave some spectacular pranks, and naturally equalized.
In the deciding set Halep managed to make a quick break, and in the seventh game of Simon again took the feed Mladenovic and easily filed into the match, having the first title of the season.
Halep is the third time in his career won the tournament series Premier Mandatory, which brought the Romanian more than a million euros in prize money and 1000 ranking points, thanks to which Simon Monday will be back on the fourth line in the WTA rankings.
