Giro d’italia-2017: the Austrian Mistlberger outwitted the sprinters

Completed the start-up stage of the 100th version of the Cycling race Giro d’italia.

The first phase of the jubilee version of the Italian race took place on the roads of Sardinia. The peloton started in the famous resort of Alghero, and the finish cut took Olbia. Over 206 miles of the race participants had to overcome two vertices of the fourth category and the final part of the stage was complicated by sharp turns and a small area of pavers.

From the first kilometers of the race formed a group of six people, the best known of which was Russian Pavel Brutt, who won stage Giro in 2008.

The fugitives quickly gained a 7-minute gap from the main group. While the lead was playing the mountain category in the peloton nothing interesting happened. Gradually the sprint teams started to get closer to the margin, which ceased to exist in 3.7 km to go.

Then the stopper was formed that played in favor of the rider “Bora-hansgrohe” Lucas Mistlberger, who decided on a solo attack and outwitted the sprinters who planned to play for the stage victory.

Mistlberger, became the first Austrian, who won a stage at the Giro d’italia. A nice bonus for the rider’s pink Jersey of the overall standings.

Giro d’italia-2017. The results of the first stage:

1. Lucas, Mistlberger (Austria, Bora-hansgrohe)
2. Caleb Ewan (Australia, Orica-Scott)
3. Andre Greipel (Germany, Lotto Soudal)
4. Giacomo Nizzola (Italy, Trek-Segafredo)
5. Sasha Modolo (Italy, UAE, Emirates Team)
