Germany asks Turkey to overcome the split in society

The results of the constitutional referendum indicate a deep split in Turkish society, said the German government.

The German government has urged Turkey to overcome the split in society, which is confirmed by the results of the constitutional referendum, which provides for significantly expands the powers of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a joint statement, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said that the almost equal distribution of votes shows just how deeply divided Turkish society, and emphasize the great responsibility that lies on the Turkish state leadership and personally President Erdogan.

Merkel and Gabriel said that the German government takes note of the preliminary results of the vote and respects the right of Turkish citizens to make decisions about their own constitutional order.

At the same time, they noted that the head of the Office for democratic institutions and human rights (ODIHR) Michael link doubted that the referendum was created fair and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe expressed serious concern about the procedure for the referendum and the issues voted on.

The document also expressed hope “for a speedy start of political negotiations with Turkey on a bilateral level between individual European institutions and Turkey.”

We will remind, on April 16 in Turkey held a referendum on amendments to the Constitution, which the President has all the power in the country. After treatment, 99.5% of the ballots of the supporters of the constitutional amendments are gaining 51,4% of the votes.
