General Motors will build a huge wind power station in Australia

The American company will build the largest wind turbine on the continent.

General Electric together with AGL will build the largest in Australia, wind power station, Coopers Gap, with a capacity of 453 MW. After the station is put into operation in 2019, AGL undertook to purchase electricity generated by it for a extremely low $60 per Megawatt-hours.

AGL representatives said that the company completed the sale process of the project Fund Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF) for $22 million the Company has created PARF last year in partnership with the investment company Queensland to manage wind and solar power plants with a total capacity of 1 thousand MW. The total cost of the Coopers Gap amounts to $850 million Construction works will be done by General Electric.

The station will be collected 123 GE turbines for the production of about 1.5 million MWh of energy per year — enough to power more than 260 homes in Australia. AGL will buy the electricity station for $60 per MWh during the first five years, after which the agreement can be extended even with a lower purchase price.

According to the Executive Director of AGL Brett Redman, the construction of the Coopers Gap demonstrates the growing demand for renewable energy thanks to falling prices, more efficient technologies and effective investment model.

Australia because of their geography (wide spaces, hot weather, strong winds and the proximity of the ocean) has great potential for implementing renewable energy sources. Commissioning of the Coopers Gap will increase the total capacity of wind power stations built by AGL in Australia to 1.4 GW.

“This is the largest number of megawatts of capacity in one year outside the United States, says Pete McCabe, General Manager of GE Renewable Energy Onshore Wind. — Australia is a great market for wind energy, and today it is the second largest region in the world for our business in the field of renewable energy.”
