In the Pacific ocean has long existed the so-called “Great Pacific garbage patch” — a giant accumulation of small plastic particles; they are called “trash continent.” On this “continent” can not walk, can not see it from space: a spot of debris, formed by the ocean currents, too sparse. However, it causes significant damage to marine animals and the environment; and what to do with it, is still unclear. The British edition of the LADbible, specializing in the meme and viral video, decided to turn the “garbage patch” in the current state it already has its own currency, postage stamps, passports and the first citizen, informs news.eizvestia.com.

It is quite difficult to notice: the satellite images of spot quietly, not seeing it and passing sailors. It is caused by the small size of the plastic particles, which are in the Northern part of the Pacific ocean herding the North Pacific current; it creates something like a whirlpool in which accumulate plastic particles. The area of the spot is unknown, the most conservative estimate it is about 700 thousand square kilometers, that is more the size of France and about the same as the entire territory of Texas.
The “garbage patch” — no not an island, but rather jelly of plastic which marine animals are mistaken for zooplankton. Plastic harms fish and marine mammals and birds (their stomachs become clogged with a mass, which they can’t digest), but also people: toxic substances contained in the “garbage patch”, accumulate in fish meat and can be dangerous to humans. Pacific spot is not the only such accumulation of debris, similar to the “island” there in the Atlantic ocean, but it is much smaller.
How to solve the problem such accumulations of garbage, is still unknown. Various environmental groups have offered their own versions, including the establishment of special traps for recycling plastic, but none of them had been implemented.
To draw attention to the problem, employees of English advertising Agency AMV BBDO Michael Hughes and Dalatangi Almeida in conjunction with the publication LADbible (you’ve probably seen his viral video on Facebook) decided to turn the “garbage patch” in the present state. They decided that the accumulations of debris are all signs of the state, for example territorial boundaries. Missing signs Hughes and Almeida have provided themselves: they painted a local currency called “fragments”, invented postage stamps and the design of the passport (of course, from recycled paper), and the flag and the name of the state — “Garbage island”.
The project was supported by several celebrities, including British runner Mo Farah and actress Judi Dench. Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States and one of the most prominent activists of fighters with global warming, even decided to become the first citizen of the new state.
The creators of “Garbage Islands” sent a statement to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to officially recognize their government. Sign the petition for the recognition of “Garbage Islands” 196th country in the world on Change.org.
Please, of course, is unlikely to be fulfilled, but the task of the creators of “the garbage state” is not to create a new country — they are fighting against environmental pollution. In the comments on Change.org, however, took the idea seriously enough; they even offer to send the command to a new state on the world Cup.
