Famous artist called error that is associated with the destruction of monuments

Roitburd sure to demolish the monuments are not worth it.

In the framework of the Council do not have to demolish the monuments, just enough to competently explain their symbolism additional panels.

This was stated by the artist Alexander Roitburd in the interview.

“One criterion: artistic merit. Grandpa Lenin, incidentally, signed a decree, according to which the monuments of kings, their servants and other exploiters of the people were supposed to carry, in addition to those that represent artistic value. And a number of monuments still preserved from the Imperial times, although the people to whom these monuments are dedicated, was ideologically debunked. The perception of the monuments depends on the context. Take for example the monument to Vorontsov in Odessa, after the revolution of 1917 was demolished. First it hung a sign with the epigram of Pushkin: “Polamidon, prokopec, promotes, polonowita, polypodies…”. Thus the monument was desacralized, transformed from the object of worship in a historical artifact, and with a critical attitude. After the war, the plaque was replaced with neutral, since Vorontsov was not caused anybody any strong feelings, unless purely historical interest. Ordinary people interested in the question of sleeping with Pushkin Vorontsov’s wife, that’s all,” he said.

The artist also recalled the “fight” with the monument to Shchors.

“Now think about what political load was a monument to Shchors before him began to “fight”? Who remembered him, who he was interested in who was political reference point? He is associated only with the song “Head bandaged, the blood on his sleeve the bloody trail spreads on the wet grass”, sung mostly in a drunken state, putting in a performance for a significant share of irony. This song is already Sots art, the Soviet model of naive art, which caused only a smile, like a portrait of Shevchenko depicted the rural artist. So everything that Shchors was associated in most people,” continued Roitburd.

He noted that it was possible to give explanatory labels near the monument and to correct situaciu.

“I this monument is associated with a high sample horse sculpture. In Ukraine nobody is ever blind, school degraded. And it’s so mythologized character that it was enough to write a sign: “a monument to the myth created by Alexander Dovzhenko”, plus some explanatory notes. And this statue would become of the monument to Shchors in the testimony of a certain era of Soviet mythology,” concluded the artist.
