Now on the Ground on the verge of extinction is every fifth species, the end of the century their number will increase to half unless urgent action is taken.
This scenario will be discussed by leading biologists, ecologists and economists on Monday at the Vatican at the conference on issues of cheznovice species under the auspices of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
The task of scientists is to identify the social and economic measures necessary for the preservation of the planet’s biosphere.
“The living fabric of the world slip through our fingers without our care,” say the organizers of the conference. Under threat of extinction were tigers and rhinos. But in addition to them from the face of the earth may be lost, other, less well-known non-scientific circles life forms, scientists warn.
“Rich Western countries are pumping resources of the planet and destroying the ecosystem. We want to build a highway through the Serengeti to earn more rare minerals for our cell phones. We caught fish from the seas, destroying coral reefs, the atmosphere emitted CO2. We caused the global extinction. The question is, how can we stop it?” says a biologist from Stanford University, Paul Ehrlich, who plays for the regulation of fertility, whose participation in the conference sparked protests by many Catholics.
