If a pregnant woman diagnosed with a sleep disorder like insomnia or sleep apnea, characterized by suspension of respiration during sleep, then it increased risk of premature birth. Employees of the University of California analyzed the status of two groups of women.
The first group included 2265 women with sleep disorders, and the second (control) women without sleep disorders. It has been found that premature birth (before 37 weeks) in women with sleep disturbance had occurred in 14.6% of cases. In the control group, the figure was 10.9 per cent.
When the woman was diagnosed with a sleep disorder, the risk of delivery before 34 weeks was increased more than two times. And if insomnia is diagnosed, the risk was almost doubled. Doctors emphasize a pregnant woman needs to carefully monitor the quality of sleep. According to them, many of the consequences of sleep problems are reversible, if not to let the situation slide.
